Imagine a course that attracts students and sales, but doesn’t produce leads or future business.
This is exactly what was going on with a 6-figure business I consulted a little over a year ago.
They had just removed a digital course from their product suite because it was no longer in alignment with the business model.
Even though the course was selling itself on autopilot, and the students who bought this course were getting results, they were not converting into future clients.
The notion of working harder (not smarter) to generate leads really didn't make sense.
And, the funny thing was that even though it didn't make sense to me (or my client), THAT was what most digital course-based businesses were doing!
They were myopically focused on throwing lots of money at ads that would sell lower-end digital courses that would eventually waste away in inboxes and download folders.
This leads me to some very serious thoughts about the role of digital courses in scaling a business:

Why should businesses care about making high-quality digital courses that not only sell volumes in the short term but actually help them to sell their high ticket services and make a real impact as well?
Then I got clear: digital course completion is much bigger than just getting students from start to finish.
Of course, getting them from start to finish is a HUGE accomplishment, especially considering only a fraction of students makes it past the 10% completion mark of most digital courses!
But we all know that SUCCESS is more of a milestone or pitstop than an actual destination.

And I will be the first to acknowledge that there are lots of things that are really important to scaling with digital courses.
However, in my opinion, the ONE thing that stands above the rest is student success.
When students succeed, the teacher succeeds.
And if the teachers just happen to be entrepreneurs, then their businesses succeed too.
We absolutely need student success in order to scale because it attracts the right students so that we can generate recurring income, and make a bigger impact.
What course completion REALLY means for students and businesses
When students complete a digital course, they don’t just celebrate the fact that they finished - they celebrate their success or transformation.
The outcome of the digital course is what is important to the student who invested their time, energy and faith into doing the work.
The outcome is also important to the business because this is why they created the digital course in the first place.
More importantly, now that the student has risen to the next level, the business has positioned itself as the best, most logical next step to helping the student navigate this next level (and beyond!)
And this is the type of advertising that is invaluable!
Word-of-mouth referrals and testimonials are worth more than their weight in gold because these glowing recommendations are the social proof that builds confidence, authority, and the foundation necessary for scaling.

With course completion comes the next level and next steps.
But getting students from start to finish to becoming the next success story takes some careful planning and execution.
This is where so many businesses selling digital courses end up working harder not smarter, as they fail to retain and convert their digital course students into clients.
Considering that it is a million times easier to keep a client than to find a new one, this should be the strategy for ALL digital courses.
For the most LUCRATIVE digital courses and programs, student success and retention should be a priority.
Anything less, and you are leaving good money on the table!
